This is a typical example of the work we handle, based on how this kind of job is normally carried out. It is not a record of an individual customer’s visit.
A tyre repair enquiry in Bicester often starts with a question rather than a clear fault: “Can this tyre be repaired?” It might be a cut from a kerb in a town-centre car park, a bulge noticed while washing the car, or a tyre that keeps losing air with no obvious cause. A mobile tyre repair visit starts with finding out what the damage actually is.
Types of tyre damage we assess
Tyre problems are not all the same, and each has a different outcome:
- Punctures from nails and screws in the central tread: often repairable
- Slow leaks from the bead, where the tyre meets the rim: may be caused by corrosion or dirt on the wheel rather than the tyre
- Leaking tyre valves: the valve can be replaced without replacing the tyre
- Cuts and gouges in the tread: depends on depth and size
- Sidewall cuts, bulges and cracking: not repairable, the tyre needs replacing
- Damage from driving while flat: usually means replacement
Finding the cause of an unexplained leak
When a tyre loses pressure and nothing is visible, the tyre and wheel are checked systematically. The tread, sidewalls, valve and the seal between tyre and rim are all examined. Finding the actual source matters, because refitting a tyre with a corroded rim seal or a faulty valve would simply bring the problem back.
When repair is possible
Puncture repairs are carried out to BS AU 159 standards where the tyre is suitable. The standard limits repairs to the central part of the tread and to injuries within a set size, and it requires the tyre to be inspected from the inside. For a straightforward nail or screw, see our guide to a typical nail-in-tyre puncture repair.
When replacement is the safer answer
A tyre should be replaced rather than repaired if the damage is in the sidewall or shoulder, if the injury is too large, if there is internal damage, or if the tread is at or near the legal minimum of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. In those cases we explain what we found and can fit a replacement on the same visit, subject to the right tyre being available.
Why the vehicle details matter
Some tyres need extra thought. Run-flat tyres, EV tyres and tyres on 4x4s and SUVs can have their own repair guidance, so tell us what is fitted when you call. The registration and the size written on the sidewall help us bring the right replacement if one turns out to be needed.
